Locking files on a WebDAV server

The WebDAV protocol supports two kinds of locks, exclusive and shared:

  • An exclusive lock set by someone else is indicated by a padlock icon (). Only the person who locked the file can edit it. Other users have read-only access to the file.
  • An exclusive lock assigned to you is indicated by the pencil icon (). This indicated that only you can edit the file.
  • A shared lock assigned to other users is indicated by the shared lock icon (). Unlike an exclusive lock, the shared lock simply alerts people that several individuals are editing the same file. It does not actually lock the file. People without a shared lock can only read the document.
  • A shared lock you participate in is indicated by a variation of the shared lock icon ().

  • Note: If Workgroup Support is enabled for a site, the procedures for manually locking and unlocking files or folders are disabled and unnecessary, since the Workgroup Support option provides its own automatic locking/unlocking mechanism. See Enhancing WebDAV with Workgroup Support for additional details.

To lock files on a WebDAV server:

1 Select the file you want to lock on the WebDAV tab of the site window.

2 Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the selected file, and choose Lock or Shared Lock from the context menu, depending whether you want an exclusive or shared lock. An exclusive lock or shared lock icon appears to the right of the file name in the WebDAV tab.

If you have Workgroup Support enabled for the site, you do not have to manually lock and unlock files as you work with them locally and on the WebDAV server. With Workgroup Support enabled, Adobe GoLive automatically locks files as they are downloaded or checked out from the WebDAV server and unlocks them when they are uploaded or checked back in. In addition, files and folders are synchronized automatically throughout the workflow as they are uploaded and downloaded. If modifications on a checked out file affect other files still on the server, Adobe GoLive automatically locks these files as well. See Setting WebDAV preferences for instructions on enabling Workgroup Support, and Enhancing WebDAV with Workgroup Support for details on the using the Workgroup Support option in conjunction with WebDAV.

To lock a folder on a WebDAV server:

1 Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the folder you want to lock on the WebDAV tab.

2 Choose Lock All from the context menu.

To lock a selection of files on a WebDAV server:

1 Shift-select the files you want to lock on the WebDAV tab of the site window.

2 Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the selected files, and choose Lock or Shared Lock from the context menu, depending whether you want an exclusive or shared lock. An exclusive lock or shared lock icon appears to the right of each of the file names in the WebDAV tab.

To unlock files on a WebDAV server:

1 Select the files or folder you want to unlock on the WebDAV tab of the site window.

2 Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the selected file, and choose Unlock from the context menu. The locked icon to the right of the file names in the WebDAV tab disappears.

Note: Microsoft IIS 5 doesn't support locking folders. Only single files can be locked or unlocked.
